Daughter, Mother

Artist Statement

I’m fascinated with hands. I’m fascinated with the power they possess. They can be used as a tool to communicate, to express emotion, to interact with objects or other people and, like the rest of our bodies, evolve over time. These painting studies present my hand in contrast with my mother’s. My mother says I have my Grandmother’s hands. By that, she means I have two quite wonky fingers like her mother. I never got the chance to know her so I quite like the idea of having this feature as a way to carry part of her around with me. In contrast, my mother’s hands are strong and soft and dotted with sunspots. They are both gentle and protective. I don’t see much of a visual resemblance when I compare our hands but perhaps I’ll grow into them.
