Loneliness Subsides

Artist Statement

Although we haven’t felt the full weight of the pandemic in Tasmania, there was a brief time when I found myself living on my own throughout lockdown. During this time, much like many others, I became very aware of my own loneliness.

Nearly two years have passed and I’m once again in the presence of my loved ones, however, the feeling remains.

I have painted myself on a lazy Sunday afternoon, lying on my hallway floor with my dog, Archie. He rests comfortably in my arms; his eyes jammed shut. We are both content sharing the same space, trusting each other completely, with no lingering thoughts of being elsewhere or the desire to communicate through words.

As I reflect upon these quiet moments I share with others, whether they’re loved ones, strangers or even a pet, I realise how these seemingly insignificant interactions affect my day and outlook on life. For a brief time, my loneliness subsides and I’m experiencing a shared moment of belonging.
